Abstract
Africa’s immigration crisis is partly informed by the narrative of the West as the Promised Land. Like many Anglophone writers of the early generations, the new generations of African writers deconstruct in their narratives the long established myth of the West as the only place of empowerment and self-fulfillment for young Africans. Such is the case of Ifeoma Chinwuba whose first novel, Merchants of Flesh (2003), gives a vivid picture of the international human trafficking and sex market trade happening between Italy and Nigeria. The aim of this article is twofold. First, it introduces Ifeoma Chinwuba’s Merchants of Flesh (2003) as a deconstructionist tale that belongs to the same literary tradition as Amma Darko’s Beyond the Horizon (1995) and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Americanah (2013). Second, using a metaphorical analysis, the article studies the impact of Covid-19on human-beings and that of AIDS and prostitution of which Ifeoma Chinwuba’s female characters are victims, healthy bodies being voluntarily turned into unhealthy ones for financial reasons.

Résumé
La crise d’immigration africaine présente en partie l’Occident comme la terre promise. A l’instar des premiers écrivains Africains, la nouvelle génération déconstruit le mythe de l’Occident comme étant le seul espace d’épanouissement et de réalisation personnelle des jeunes africains. Tel est le cas d’Ifeoma Chinwuba dont le premier roman, Merchants of Flesh (2003), donne une vive image du trafic humain international et du commerce de sexe entre l’Italie et le Nigeria. L’objectif de cet article est double. Dans un premier temps, il présente Merchants of Flesh comme un récit de déconstruction appartenant à la même tradition littéraire que Beyond the Horizon (1995) d’Amma Darko, et Americanah (2003) de Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Dans un second temps, l’article procède à une analyse métaphorique de l’impact de la Covid-19 sur les êtres humains et de celui du SIDA et la prostitution dont les personnages féminins d’Ifeoma Chinwuba sont victimes. De ce fait, il étudie la transformation volontaire des corps sains en corps malsains pour des raisons financières.
